We had a busy week! I completed my daughter's kindergarten portfolio and had her homeschool evaluation done remotely through Messenger.
I wanted to share what my county in Florida requires and some samples of what I included.
The documents that my county requires are as follows:
1. some type of LOG that includes work done & when
2. READING LIST
3. SAMPLES from beginning, middle & end PER SUBJECT to show improvement (at least 3)
I chose to do a daily log. Other logs can be weekly, monthly, or quarterly.
Here's a sample!
We did a total of 5 subjects. On May 18th, my daughter did not do Physical Education. If she had, I would have added Phys Ed beneath Science. I kept each day stream lined. If she didn't do a subject that day, I simply recorded the subjects she did do in the following order:
1. Art & Music
2. Language Arts
3. Math
4. Science
5. Phys Ed
I struggled with organizing our units studies that overlapped in subjects. I went with this simple category system. I ended up putting all books under Language Arts. I choose this because of the reading comprehension aspect of all books. It's only Kindergarten after all! I put many of the Science inspired art projects in Art & Music. Experiments and homemade science books stayed in Science.
We covered so many different aspects of science that I felt combining Astronomy, Engineering, Paleontology, Meteorology, Botany etc did a disservice to our work. I also wanted to limit my and the evaluator's time, so I simplified. I really wanted to show off all the amazing art, crafts and projects that we did. I chose not to because I wanted it done. I didn't want to spend a hundred hours scanning, cropping, editing, and uploading!
This was the final Science Sample Page! I wrote the dates and a brief description of the picture.
READING LIST
The Reading List was time consuming. It was a simple idea. Just list all the books in your log, right? Nope. I failed to record the author's, and I had to look up EVERY single one. This included my home library as well as the public one. Some books don't have author's so a publisher would suffice. Sometimes there are multiple books with the SAME name, or same book with DIFFERENT covers! This was the most time consuming task of the whole project. I NEVER want to do it again and will record the author or publisher in the log for future reference. I did try to keep a running book list. That didn't go very well due to reading the same books often leading to multiple times a single book showed on the reading list. I know I left out tons of books that we read, but I figured 5 pages of single type, size 10 font was enough for the record.
The last item my county in Florida required were samples of work that showed progress in that subject area. You should choose items that contrast each other. Like the math samples below!
What I DID NOT include: field trip list (in the daily log), excess photos, craft list, unit study list, & curriculum list (in the daily log).
What I DID INCLUDE: the confirmation of the receipt of my letter of intent to homeschool. This was sent out by my county confirming their receipt of my Letter of Intent. It included my address, the student's name and date of birth, & due date of the evaluation. This was easier to scan and begin the portfolio with than having to type out all that information! That was the BEST TIP I found in creating a homeschool portfolio!
